Acronym SEDD stands for the Southside Economic Development District
SEDD is a taxing district empowered by the state legislature to use public funds provided by taxes and other agreements to improve the quality of life of South Monroe. While donations to SEDD are tax deductible because of its governmental function, it is not a federally recognized tax exempt corporation.
There are seven commissioners on the SEDD Board of directors. By law, each commissioner is a public official, although not elected by the general public. One member of its board is appointed by the mayor, one each are appointed by council members representing Districts 3, 4, 5; one member is appointed by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, and two members are appointed by African-American Chamber of Commerce. Board members serve three-year terms and serve until their replacements are appointed. Their appointments must be approved by the Monroe City Council.
The SEDD meets on the first Monday of each month. Holidays or special circumstances may alter monthly meeting dates, but are announced to the public pursuant to Open Meetings law rules.
All meetings are open to the public, and a public comment period is offered at the end of each meeting.
